The Algorand Ambassador network in perspective

Background

The Algorand Foundation launched the Ambassador Program aimed at building a community that will promote the project across different countries and communities online. After the launch in 2019, people began to sign up from different countries. Algorand Ambassador rewards program is aimed at encouraging both developers and non-developers to contribute diverse content, both offline and online.  To accomplish this goal, Algorand Foundation has kept aside a portion of ALGO tokens as rewards to bootstrap the initial community. The goal is to have motivated ambassadors promoting the Algorand brand to businesses, enterprises, and potential users across the globe. Where are the ambassadors coming from and what is the global spread since its launch?

The Algorand Ambassador community has since grown bigger into a borderless community, mirroring the goal of Algorand to build a borderless, global economy. Hence, I decided to analyze the dynamic of the Algorand Ambassador Community in August 2020. I decided to do a one-year perspective.

The data has been segregated into continents/zones. The report highlighted countries with significant ambassador population. Please note that the analysis does not in any way depict the investment into Algorand or the regions where the Algorand accounts and transactions are created. However, it can form the bases for making inferences on the balance and distribution of the Algorand spread.

Results and Analysis.

The ambassador program has over 400 members coming from 72+ countries since its launch. There are ambassadors from every continent who are contributing in diverse ways to the growth of the Algorand ecosystem. These ambassadors cover both developers and non-developers. The USA, Russia, India, China, and Nigeria are the top 5 countries and they account for 37% of ambassadors. The results were plotted on the world map to capture the global distribution of the Ambassador network as shown below. Following the map below is a regional discussion of the ambassador network for each continent.

The United States leads in terms of ambassador population, making 10%, with India coming second with 8%. Several countries in Africa still lack representation though Nigeria is an outlier with a global percentage of 6% and a continent percentage of 46%.

Asia Ambassador Network

Asia had the highest concentration of ambassador networks accounting for about 33.5% of the entire ambassador network. The ambassadors are coming from 2 countries namely India and China, and accounting for about 45% of the Asia ambassador population. India and China both account for about 23.9% and 21.6 % of Asia ambassadors, respectively. Philippines, Kazakhstan, Japan, and Pakistan follow with a significant ambassador population. The increasing numbers from Asia could be explained by the conscious efforts of the Algorand Foundation to focus on building projects out of Asia. The recent launch of the Algorand Asia Accelerator has helped to create the buzz and awareness about the project in this region. It, therefore, means that translation efforts by Ambassadors from these regions should be encouraged.

Europe Ambassador network

Second, after Asia, the ambassador network in Europe which has about 31% of the ambassador population. Europe presented an interesting dynamic when the data is segregated into Eastern and Western Europe. Eastern Europe leads with 53% with Russia alone accounting for 18% across Europe. Western Europe is fairly distributed with the UK, Italy, and Spain, and France all had about equal ambassador population. Other Eastern European countries with significant contributions include Belarus and Turkey.

North America Ambassador Network

North America accounts for 14.3% of the ambassador population with the USA having the highest count for this region. The USA has a higher ambassador count across all countries as well, with about 10% ambassadors. Next is Canada with a significant number of ambassadors for the North America region. Together with the USA, they contribute about 91% of the ambassador network in North America. The other countries from this region are Mexico and Cuba accounting for just 8%. These two countries, Mexico and Cuba, are non-English speaking countries and could partly explain the low numbers from these regions. Translation for Spanish countries may be a focus area for the ambassador program.

Africa Ambassador Network

The African continent ambassador network constitutes about 13% with Nigeria taking a pole lead in the number of ambassadors from the region. Nigeria’s share of ambassadors from Africa stands at 46% with the rest spread across other African countries. Next after Nigeria is Tanzania contributing about 17% to the ambassador network. Ambassadors in Africa mostly come from Anglophone countries with little representation from the Francophone countries.

South America Ambassador Network

The region in its entirety has a very low ambassador network with just about 4.5%. Brazil and Argentina were the major contributing countries. One plausible explanation could be the language barrier to attracting ambassadors from this region.

Oceania

Only two countries represented from this region with Australia accounting for about 93%. The region accounts for just 3.5% of the ambassador network

Conclusion

The concentration of ambassadors is in the Asia and Eastern Europe corridors as well as the North American region. The other regions and countries are evenly distributed with Nigeria being the only outlier with a higher concentration. French and Spanish speaking countries are underrepresented. However, the recent focus of the Algorand network in Asia could as well explain concentration in that region but not surprising since Asia has a higher adoption rate for cryptocurrency.

This report does not measure efforts at recruiting institutional players to the Algorand ecosystem. It is possible to have fewer ambassadors in a country or continent who are recruiting institutions to adopt the Algorand blockchain.  It also does not indicate a correlation to investment in the Algorand token since the Algorand addresses are anonymous and not linked to any ecosystem. Lastly, to measure the contribution of ambassadors in terms of content and rewards earned will require additional data and collaboration from the Algorand community managers.
